Scenes From a Memory - 1

The sign from the old Jewel movie theater in Humble, TX. This was the nearest theater when we first moved to the Houston suburb of Kingwood in 1972. For the next few years, my Friday nights were spent at that theater. Afterwards, my friends and I would walk several block to the Dairy Queen (it had the nearest pay phone) and eat ice cream until our parents picked us up. It closed around 1976 when two new theaters opened, and the building was gutted by a fire in the 80's. It now houses an engineering firm and an attorney.

My apologies to all for the lack of commenting and responses from me lately. Depression has hit me again, and I find it difficult to have enthusiasm for anything right now, especially photography. My thanks to Mike (Observing) for the idea to go out and take some shots of local buildings.

Sometimes thats all we have is the memories now you have them in photo form. I know that depression can sometimes stop you in your tracks but I have found that if I make new memories that helps too. Keep up the good work I enjoyed you history of the building, as much as the viewing of the picture.

@Loretta: Thank you very much for the kind comment, Loretta. I had gone out that morning just intending to take some shots of local landmarks, but this one (the second location of the morning) brought back a flood of memories from childhood, hence the title of this series. Instead of photographing the local landmarks, I set out to get some photos of places from my childhood. I have one more photo to get tomorrow afternoon to complete the series.

Hi Eric, that certainly is a jewel in the sky there, great sunny colors. And the shape of the roof, and lines, also matches those on the sign. Splendid. I'll post something similar in the next few day's.

That's a great story with this shot, but weren't they just better times then... Kids were kids ! For me the 60 - 70's seems special.

@Observing: Thanks, Mike! Those were definitely better and more innocent times back then. I can't even imagine letting 10 and 11 year-old kids run around that part of town on a Friday night these days! But I guess every generation looks back and says, "Those were the days!", don't they?

@dj.tigersprout: Thanks, Jay. Popcorn, soda, and watching PG-rated movies without adult supervision; what more could an eleven year old kid ask for back then?

PS: I'm not going anywhere, not just yet. I still have a few photos shuffled around and an HDR landscape series coming up.

I'm not sure which I loved most, the deep rich colorful picture or your story that goes with it. I went through a terrible time of depression many years ago and I really know how hard it is. I used to say to myself over and over again. "this too shall pass. This too shall pass." and it always did. Just know that you have friends here in the Am3 community that care about you and are thinking good thoughts and prayers for you. Get better soon.

@Marion: Thank you so much for the kind comments and prayers, Marion! The thing that is so frustrating about the depressions I get is that while they only last a few months at a time, they return each spring and fall. I always keep myself going by finding something that I want to do, someplace to go, some old friend to visit. An old girlfriend is renting a beach house for a week at the end of the month, so that will be a welcome retreat, and an opportunity for more sunrise photos!
