Available Light

"All Four Winds together can't bring the world to me;
Shadows hide the play of light, so much I want to see.
Chase the light around the world,
I want to look at life in the Available Light"

"Available Light" - Rush

This one is from three exposures 1 EV apart. Photomatix recommends using a spacing of 2 EV, but my camera seem to overcompensate at those spacings, giving one good exposure, one completely blown out, and one almost entirely black. This is a fun program to play with, but I don't think I'll be doing a great deal of HDR work, as I can get pretty close in Lightroom for a lot of shots. I do like the details in the clouds shadows and the light rays, though. It will make a lot of extra work, as the photos need to go through Lightroom twice just for the noise reduction. It's a bit over-saturated, but I liked the enhancement it brought to the light rays.

There are a couple of blotches near the top that I tried to clone out, but I'm not too good at that yet. I didn't realize that the sea spray had gotten on my lens...

Thanks for visiting, and I hope you all have a great day,
Eric

a stunning and powerful image -- radiating with light and energy!! wonderful blue hues and lovely yellows and golds! beautiful detailing too -- nearly surreal!

@dj.tigersprout: Thanks, DJ! We had left the deck and were sitting on the beach throwing leftover pasta to the crabs and seagulls when this cloud passed in front of the sun. I had to run back upstairs, as I had left my camera and tripod on the deck from shooting the sunrise!

jamesy from christchurch, New Zealand

WOW!!! photo of the day for me. Being a beginner this HDR seems too complicated but man I like this.

25 Aug 2008 7:18am

@jamesy: Thank you so much, Jamesy! It really isn't all that complicated, as the Photomatix program does the hardest part, it's a lot like any other post-processing other than that. It's just really time consuming, especially when you factor in that I've redone this photo about 4 times! LOL. The more I looked at it, the more I wanted to adjust certain things in it, mostly the noise level and the saturations.

Excellent shot!!! I can't come anywhere close to that! I only have one picture on my blog so far and it's nothing compared to this. I'm using a really cheap camera, but it's all can afford (I'm a gradutate student so money is tight right now). Seeing this really inspires me! Thanks for posting it!
