Sunrise Storm at Crystal Beach

I went out to take some sunrise photos the first morning I was on vacation. A thunderstorm was moving in from the Gulf of Mexico, and I was able to capture the lightning in a couple of shots. I usually save my favorite shots until the end of a series, but this one was too exciting to wait!
(Some of you who have kept up with my photos for a while may wonder about my sanity, as do I, at times. Taking photos with a metal tripod in a thunderstorm, leaning closer for a better shot of venomous snakes...Yep, I'm probably crazy.) ;)

@Observing: Thank you very much, Mike! I had set up my tripod at first light and began taking shots as quickly as I could. I had lots of photos with the beautiful colors, but when I returned to the house, I found 3 with a good burst of lightning in them. I can't wait for the next chance to get a lightning photo...

Fantastic shot, a passive eye may remain on the bottom of the photo, but the lightening capture is something very attractive!

@Tim: Thank you, Tim. Sorry about the copyright, but I learned the hard way early on about having my photos copyrighted. Right now, I'm not terribly concerned about making money from my photos, but I certainly don't want someone else to unjustifiably profit from my passion.

Beautiful shot. And why would we question your sanity? Isn't it perfectly normal to risk life and limb for the "perfect shot"?

@willow: Thanks, Willow! I'm willing to take a fall for a photo, or even risk a fine for trespassing (that story will be coming in a few weeks.) But getting zapped by lightning just isn't something I care to do just yet! (After you see tomorrow's photo, you'll understand why!)

That blast of light in the cloud sure makes a terrific shot.
I guess we all lean a little to far over the cliff or get too close to over a ton of angry bull. That is photography. One time I was half way down a cliff toward a raging river and realized I was all alone. It wasn't the dying that worried me. It was losing the 5D.

@DarkElf: Thank you very much, DE. I had shot several (70 actually) of this same scene, and got 2 with the lightning in it without realizing it. Needless to say, I wasn't terribly interested in the others after finding the lightning here! :)

This photo is simply gorgeous. Fabulous colors, perfect composition--with the large thunderheads to the right tapering off to small clouds. The angle of the beach and water. The reflections of the sunrise in the water. Just excellent.

@Anita: Thank you very much, Anita! I'll take the credit for setting my camera in the proper place and time, and pressing the shutter, but the composition is from someone greater than I...It was truly a magical and unforgettable morning!
