saeed from ahwaz, Iranreally the best! really!! her eye is wonderfull! great shot with excellent details! you are the best Eric! Cheers you! 10 Jul 2008 8:17am @saeed: Thank you so very much, Saeed! I don't really think I'm the best, but I do believe that I'm getting better with time and practice. Cheers to you, my friend, and best wishes from Houston to Ahwaz! @Veronelle: Merci beaucoup, Veronelle! @Anita: Thanks so much for the comment and the message, Anita. That circle is the butterfly's proboscis, the yellow stuff in it is some liquid from the pieces of fruit that are left out for the butterflies to feed on. The Red Postman butterfly is unusual in that it is one of only a few species that will also eat pollen and fruit solids in addition to flower nectar. The higher quality food and bits of protein in the pollen lets this species live longer than most; up to several months instead of a few weeks. paulski from Muncie, IN, United Stateswow! very impressive. love the detail here, especially in the eye. excellent! 10 Jul 2008 11:15am @paulski: Thank you very much, Paul! That eye is what really captured my attention when I was processing this shot. Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomOutstanding...! this is almost micro-photography, I can see every detail. Isn't nature incredible, makes one wonder what the designer had in mind. 10 Jul 2008 11:19am @Observing: It certainly does, Mike! I'm sure that there is some sort of function for all of those small details, but I'd like to think that beauty in those details was put there for us to find and appreciate. Thanks for the compliment! Earnest from Oklahoma, United StatesI sure can't disagree with you on that, Eric... Astonishing! 10 Jul 2008 11:30am @Earnest: Thank you so much, Earnest. I was pretty astonished when this one loaded up on my screen when I got home. Laurent from Lyon, Francewhat a macro! So full of details and colorful. Also perfect DOF which is not easy. 10 Jul 2008 11:36am @Laurent: Thank you so much for the compliment, Laurent! This was actually a very lucky shot in terms of DoF; I had been shooting in the macro preset mode, and this shot gave my camera exactly what it likes in terms of auto-focus and auto-aperture. The perfect amount of light put it into ISO 64 and slightly closed the aperture to give me the DoF seen here. More light would have taken it to about f4.8 or greater and brought the background into focus, and a bit less would have made it too shallow to capture all of the details around the head. willow from Chelsea, United StatesEric, I'd have to agree. This is an amazing shot. The detail, the eyes, the colors. Everything is perfect! I'm impressed! 10 Jul 2008 12:11pm @willow: Thank you so much, Willow! Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United StatesThis would be hard to beat - a beautiful capture and interesting 'pose' - it suggests a formal portrait setting. Well done 10 Jul 2008 1:05pm @Stephen Phillips: Thank you, Stephen! This one did seem quite cooperative compared to some of the other butterflies. @Rags: Thanks, Rags! @La: Thank you so much, La! @Fliss: Thank you, Felicity! dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, United Stateswow! another blinding beauty of a shot! such detail! bravo! 10 Jul 2008 9:50pm @dj.tigersprout: Thanks, DJ! I was very pleased with the detail that came out in this photo.
