Blue Morpho - Morpho peleides- Top View

This photo seems a bit plain to me, as there isn't much detail in it. I just wanted to show the striking blue top side of the Blue Morpho; they're quite a sight to see in flight, alternating from the browns to this bright flash of blue.

Eric, I love this whole series about the butterflies, entomology was my hobby in my teen years... (man, long time ago..), maybe that's why?, and most likely it's the colors, what attracts us to them.

And iterestingly anough, there is no color on the butterfly's wings, the perception of color comes from light deffraction (if I remember correctly)

@Roman: Thanks so much, Roman. I'm pretty sure that you are correct in the diffraction on butterfly wings. I do know that there is no blue pigment in any vertebrates; blue feathers, blue scales, and blue human eyes are all that way from diffraction and selective absorption.

ok -- well comp wise i could agree with you -- but the blue is so striking -- and that is what carries this pic! such color and detail! bravo!

@dj.tigersprout: The butterfly in this shot does stand on his own merits just fine (I'm not so sure about my photography, though.) The only Morphos that sat with the wings open were two on this window frame. I'm not sure if they were sunning or aged and near death, but the ones sitting in the foliage wouldn't open their wings, except to fly away from me...

Love the butterfly. I agree with the change of the background. I appreciate the shot. I've tried to get one of these with its wings open for a while and never succeeded. Good Job!

@DonLon: Thank you very much, Don. The Cockrell was full of Blue Morphos and the only one that would open its wings for me was this one on a metal window frame with a dirty window! The ones in nicer locations refused to cooperate with me, but perhaps next time one will.
