Cockrell Butterfly Center Series - 1

Posted by Eric Fry (Houston, TX, United States) on 27 June 2008 in Animal & Insect.

This begins a series of photos taken at the Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It will run a little over two weeks, so there will be plenty of colorful macros for you all to enjoy.

Banded Orange - Dryadula phaetusa

(Yes, I know, I said that I was going to try and take more photos of people; the past two weeks were already posted, and these were too good to wait! I've been at the beach, and should have a wide variety of shots from Galveston, Texas for you soon.)

Thanks for your comments and support,
E

(Edit to add: Just got back from my beach vacation, and got some spectacular shots of some thunderstorms. Some pretty good shots of birds and ships, but very few people; it was too relaxing there to go out and engage folks very much.) E - 26 June 2008, 4:37 pm local time.

Thanks for visiting, and I hope you all have a great day,
Eric

Earnest from Oklahoma, United States

I'm sure this will be an excellent series if this first photo is any indication.

@Earnest: Thank you very much, Earnest.

Actually, it's pretty difficult to not get some outstanding photos at the Cockrell; there is so much beauty packed into such a small space. As I was processing these photos, I noticed all the interesting tropical flowers that I had missed. I'll have to return just to get some pictures of the flowers.

@Observing: Thank you very much, Mike!

Peter Miller from Lichfield, United Kingdom

Whatever you are going to take is subjective, this shot from my subjective point of view is one of excellence. Superb

27 Jun 2008 1:37pm

@Peter Miller: Thank you, Peter. In my subjective perspective, I try to present the subjects as objectively as possible...Did that make sense? Oh, well, I just try to capture as much detail and realism as I can, but I am getting a little better with my composition and DoF, so my shots don't look quite so much like a textbook illustration as they used to.

Thanks again for the comment, and for adding me to your blogwatch.

dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, United States

gorgeous! a magnificent capture here... the lighting and detail is just perfect! amazing job!

27 Jun 2008 9:50pm

@dj.tigersprout: Thank you very much, DJ! The lighting inside of the Cockrell Butterfly Center presents so many variations, as it is inside of a glass pyramid. With all of the foliage inside, the lighting can vary from full sun through filtered light to deep shadow.

Anita from West Nottingham, United States

Just worked my way back through your butterfly series. Thanks for sharing. Lovely butterflies.
